Welcome to Alcorn County Recall – the website dedicated to bringing the truth to the citizens of Alcorn County.
In 2009, the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors voted to raise our taxes 4.33 mils. This is in addition to tapping into the nursing home sale money again. They have taken over $2.5 million from the original $4 million in just two years. The taxpayers who live in the City of Corinth are really having to pay. In addition to the tax increase, the supervisors are charging them an additional mil to dump at the county landfill. This is on top of the monthly garbage fee they pay to the city.
The Supervisors have bought new trucks to drive, gave pay raises in the worst economy in modern times, and wasted money on trying to get a new landfill open – a decision that has already cost the taxpayers well over $100,000 in paperwork and continues to cost as they pay a lawyer $250/hour to defend their decision. See the landfill link at right to read more about the landfill decision. (A circuit court hearing will be held on December 4, 2009 in Lee County so a judge can hear the Board’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit local citizens have filed to keep the landfill out of Wenasoga. They wouldn’t let them talk at the Board Meeting in July 08 and now they don’t want to let them have their day in court? What are they afraid of? – the truth?!)
In 2008, the Alcorn County Board of Supervisors voted to raise taxes 3.3 mils. According to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal – they did more than that. The article reports that they voted to use $1.5 million of money from the $4.2 million nursing home sale to balance the budget. Gary Ross had called the old board irresponsible for spending $900,000 to give the taxpayers a break and build the extension building. Yet his administration just increased taxes 3.3 mils and used $575,000 to balance the 2008 budget and another $925,000 to prevent a budget deficit in 2009. Gary Ross said they were making lemonade – he forgot to mention how they were paying for the lemons! STOP THE FORREST SCHOOL ROAD LANDFILL – go www.Wenasoga.com for more information!
The Alcorn Board of Supervisors voted to place a landfill on Forrest School Road. Now the fight will go to the court system. Your continued support is appreciated. As a taxpayer you should know that, with recycling, they could haul and dispose of the garbage out of county for less than $20,000/year – instead of the more than $100,000 an ACRE it’s going to cost to install a landfill. They’ve already paid Newcomb Engineering, the County Engineer, over $70,000 to prepare the paperwork for a new landfill. Contact your supervisor and ask why they are spending your taxpayer dollars in this irresponsible manner.
The public hearing on February 16, 2009 at 6:00 pm was attended by 80-100 concerned citizens. Below is an excerpt from the October 20 hearing. The complete hearing is available in a link in the right sidebar. The February 16 hearing is now available and the June 1 hearing will be available soon. Video from the board meetings is also available at the links on the right.
